Kelly

Kelly, who weighs 226 pounds, is sick of being overweight. "I was always the biggest kid in my class," she reveals. "I felt like an amazon compared to the other kids."

Her fiancé, Jeremy, is stationed in the mainland and won't be back home to Hawaii until right before their wedding. Now she's ready to make some changes. She asks Dr. Phil, "Can you help me surprise the love of my life with a new sexy body in time for the wedding? I want to be able to stand up straight and proud on the biggest day of my life."

"I'm sorry that you're not getting to see Jeremy, but it's kind of fun that you're not going to see him while you're doing this, right?" Dr. Phil asks.

It's very exciting," Kelly replies. "I don't want anyone to blow it for me."

"Do you believe you can do it?"

"I do think I can do it. That's why I'm here."

Kelly has tried numerous diets such as Weight Watchers, Atkins and Jenny Craig, but to no avail. "When I tend to diet, I usually diet and I don't exercise as much. Or I'll get into exercise and not watch what I eat as well," she admits.

Dr. Phil explains why diets don't work: "If you go on a diet, it's very restrictive, right? And you rebel against restriction."

Kelly agrees. "I do cheat."

Telling Kelly that she needs a lifestyle realignment, Dr. Phil says, "It's going to involve what you eat, how you eat, when you eat, where you eat, why you eat --all of those things. If you do what is outlined in The Ultimate Weight Solution, you will get to your goal."

Tara

Tara calls herself "fat" and "disgusting." She is also starting to feel the physical effects of being overweight. "I feel like my body has started to slow down," she says. "My back hurts. My knees hurt. I'm 30 and I feel like an old woman."

Her fiancé Chris, doesn't see a problem, but knows that Tara gets embarrassed by her weight. "She was like this when I met her. It didn't bother me," he says

Still, Tara gets emotional about what her fiancé sees in her. "How could he be attracted to this body? I don't want to look at my wedding pictures and feel like I hate the person that's in them," she says. "It's hard for me to talk about what Chris sees when he looks at my body."

Acknowledging that the taped piece was hard for Tara to watch, Dr. Phil says, "If it's so painful, why do you think you've never really gotten it under control?"

"I think it has a lot to do with denial," she replies. "I can kind of convince myself until I see a picture or see a videotape that I don't actually look as bad as I do."

Dr. Phil looks at the negative messages Tara is telling herself and explains that until she masters Key #1 she'll keep living to her labels. "Don't you call yourself a lot of names? Don't you say things when you get frustrated with yourself?" he asks.

Dr. Phil also points out that Tara is an emotional eater who numbs or rewards herself with food. "You're not using food for nutrition. You're using if for medication, right?"

"Right, I am. If I'm having a bad day at work, or something personal in my life is going on, I just need maybe a little chocolate."

Dr. Phil jokes about how well chocolate really solves a problem. "You understand this is a lifestyle realignment that has to happen," he explains.

"I do understand that."
